After a victory against the New York Jets, the Detroit Lions entered Week 4 against the Carolina Panthers with a lot of optimism to build on the momentum. But the Lions’ defense fell flat yet again, giving up 32 points, while the star-studded offense could score only 26 points. The continuous defensive struggles, poor running game, and costly penalties played a part in the crushing defeat.
Despite the Lions quarterback Jared Goff throwing for 412 passing yards, the offense couldn’t fire all the cylinders, especially in the running game. Following an impressive 3-touchdown game against the Jets, the star running back Jahmyr Gibbs had a quiet game, as he rushed for only 46 yards and scored 1 TD.
Jameson Williams had the best numbers among the receivers with 102 receiving yards, but neither Williams nor Amon Ra St Brown could reach the end zone. The tight end Sam LaPorta found one touchdown, and the overall performance of the offense was not up to the mark.
However, the biggest issue was the defense, as they could not slow down the Panthers, allowing Bryce Young to control the tempo of the game. The struggling secondary yet again didn’t have any answer to the QB’s passing game, as he completed 329 passing yards and 2 touchdowns.
After giving away 32 points at Bank of America Stadium, the Lions now have statistically the worst defense in the league this year, conceding 127 points and sitting at 32nd position. The loss raised plenty of concerns, and frustration was evident, as the Lions fans reacted to the team’s Week 4 setback.

Conceding 127 points in the first four games of the season is a serious headache for any defense, and naturally, DC Kelvin Sheppard is under fire, with many fans urging the franchise to get rid of him.
“Fire Sheppard immediately I am done with this clown,” said one user.
With the hard loss, the Lions are now 2-2 this season, sitting third in the NFC North. However, one fan compared the overall performance of the defense with the forgettable 2008 0-16 campaign of the Lions, calling the feeling worse than that year.
“I’m a lifelong Lions fan. But I’m done watching. With one of the best offenses in the NFL, you have put the worst defense in the history of the franchise together. It’s absolutely worse to watch than the 0-16 team,” noted the emotional user after the game.
With the offense scoring 26 points, one fan did not have an issue with Jared Goff and co. but highlighted the main reason behind the loss as the failure of the defense.
“Offense did their job tonight, not a great job, maybe a C+ grade. Unfortunately, the lions biggest opponent on the field tonight wasn’t the panthers, it was their defense,” wrote the user.
The defeat pushed one Lions fan over the edge, as he confessed to throwing his Lions jersey away in frustration.
“Just threw my Lions jersey in the trash. My wife told me it was expensive. I told her so was my emotional investment,” wrote the heartbroken fan after the loss.
The Lions’ last drive of the game left a bitter taste in the mouths of the Lions fans after the game ended with a short completion instead of one final attempt deep downfield, leaving some fans disappointed despite Goff’s elite numbers.
“Goff showed that he’d rather have his team lose than throw an interception,” one fan stated about the Lions QB1.
With the pressure mounting, it remains to be seen whether the general manager Brad Holmes takes any drastic move to fix the struggling defense, particularly the secondary.
