Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce isn’t ready to make a decision on whether he will return to the NFL for another season or hang up his cleats for good, but there could be one more big even that impacts his timeline.
Kelce had been hesitant to give a hard answer when asked about retirement in recent weeks, and made it clear after Sunday’s loss to the Las Vegas Raiders that he needs more time to decide what comes next. The future Hall of Fame tight end said he also contemplated retirement after last season before quickly deciding to return, but said there are more factors at play this year.
His upcoming wedding to pop superstar Taylor Swift could be one of those.
Travis Kelce Unsure About Future NFL Plans
Following Sunday’s bitter loss to the worst team in the NFL, Kelce said it could be a difficult decision on retirement — which could come quickly or slowly.
“Who knows?” Kelce told reporters. “Who knows? It either hits me quick or I’ve got to take some time. Last year, it was a little bit easier. I think I knew right away, I wanted to give this [year] a shot. We’ll see.”
The longer the decision drags on, the more complicated it could become for Kelce. While he and Swift have not been open about details for their wedding, a report claimed that the couple is planning to tie the knot in the late spring — which would come after the Chiefs hold OTAs and just before training camp opens the next month.
The New York Post’s Page Six noted that the couple is locked into a wedding venue for mid-June.
“Taylor Swift cut a hefty check to snag a bride’s wedding date at a posh Rhode Island venue, Page Six is told,” the report noted. “Multiple sources tell us that the billionaire pop superstar wanted to marry her fiancé, Travis Kelce, at Ocean House in Watch Hill on Saturday, June 13, 2026.”
Changes Coming for the Chiefs
There could be other factors at play for Kelce, including the outlook for the Chiefs after their disappointing 6-11 season. The team ended the season on a six-game losing streak, a stretch that included a season-ending injury for quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy shared some optimism, saying he believed Mahomes would give everything he had to returning.
“Obviously, the question is going to be Pat with his knee,” Nagy told reporters this week, via SI.com. “And, again, I never would want to put any type of timeline on him, but I know him way too well. I know how he’s wired, and I feel really good about where he’s at and where he will be.”
Nagy added that it would be a benefit to have Mahomes rehabbing in Kansas City, allowing him to stay in close contact with coaching staff and teammates.
“He’ll be out here with us,” Nagy said. “He’ll talk through things. He’ll lead us. But let’s all step our game up a little bit. Let’s all lead a little bit more and make up for it, until he does get back and he is out there physically to make the throws and do the drops and everything again.”
