This isn’t good news for the Carolina Hurricanes. During the team’s Tuesday night matchup against the Pittsburgh Penguins, forward Nikolaj Ehlers crashed hard into the boards on a hit by Erik Karlsson. He immediately grabbed at his right knee, and the team trainer sprinted out on theice. The trainer had to help him off the ice.

The injury took place with one minute left in the first period, so the team will get a soon-ish update on his status. Update: Nikolaj Ehlers appears to be okay, as he’s skating again.

The Hurricanes had a 1-0 lead at the time of the injury, but the Penguins scored shortly after to tie things at 1. The Hurricanes’ star forward has been a true find in NHL free agency. Ehlers has 50 points (20 goals, 30 assists) over 63 games in his first season of a six-year, $51 million deal.

During the intermission break, Nikolaj Ehlers was seen skating on the ice, which means the Hurricanes dodged some scary injury news after he was down on the ice for an extended period of time in the first period.

This situation will continue to be monitored closely by the Hurricanes’ coaching staff, and Rod Brind’Amour will likely have more information at the end of the game, but it’s great news for Carolina that Ehlers isn’t severely hurt.

Less than a week ago, Nikolaj Ehlers recorded his second hat trick with the Hurricanes, and he’s been so critical to the team’s scoring success and points bananza in recent weeks.

Other Hurricanes Injury News

In other Hurricanes news, defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere is set to miss some more time with a lower-body injury.

Walt Ruff of the Hurricanes’ official site reports Tuesday. Head coach Rod Brind’Amour didn’t sound too concerned about Gostisbehere’s availability in the long run, but he indicated the defenseman may be out Thursday versus the Blues and Saturday versus the Lightning. The injury is a recurring one for Gostisbehere, who has been in and out of the lineup multiple times this season. Mike Reilly continues to fill in on the third pairing.
