The Washington Capitals could be looking for a new captain if Ovechkin retires, with a natural replacement already on the roster.

One of the key offseason narratives that will surround the Washington Capitals is Alexander Ovechkin’s future with the team. Ovechkin will be a UFA this summer, and it remains unclear whether the 40-year-old will play another NHL season.

That situation will see a resolution when it does. Either Ovechkin signs or he retires from the NHL.

That said, a potential retirement by the Russian superstar would leave a massive hole in the Capitals’ lineup. Beyond his scoring and leadership, the organization will be looking for a new team captain.

But they might not have to look far to find one. That club already has a worthy candidate in Tom Wilson. Wilson is a lifelong Capitals player, hitting the ice for parts of 14 seasons with the club.

Wilson was a crucial piece alongside Ovechkin in the Capitals’ 2018 Stanley Cup run. In 21 games that spring, Wilson scored five goals and 10 assists.

But beyond showing the talent becoming of a former first-round pick, Wilson’s physicality and overall leadership on the ice have made him a mainstay for the club. And it’s one of the reasons why he signed a seven-year deal in 2024.

The 31-year-old will enter the third year of his current deal next season. That situation makes him a logical choice to don the “C” is an when Ovechkin retires.

Wilson Logical Choice to Take Over for Ovechkin

While there is no indication about Ovechkin’s plans, speculation has already begun about a potential transition in Washington. The John Carlson trade at this year’s NHL trade deadline signals that the organization feels it might be time to move on.

The Capitals have a decent core, gradually filling up with solid young talent. Players like Cole Hutson, Ryan Leonard, Aliaksei Protas, and Connor McMichael are just some of the pieces who could usher in a new era of competitiveness in DC.

That said, the organization will need someone to take over for Ovechkin. So, who better than Wilson to make that happen?

Wilson is the sort of leader that teammates can rally around. He’s respected, especially since opponents hate facing him. As such, the more this discussion goes on, the more Wilson’s case grows as the Capitals’ next captain.

Wilson Offers Continuity for Capitals Fans

One of the most difficult things for fans to grasp is when a longtime captain leaves. Ovechkin has seemingly been the Capitals’ captain forever. That’s a hole that the organization cannot easily fill.

But it actually can. While it might make sense to play a season without a captain, there’s really no reason not to. It’s not like Wilson, or Dylan Strome, or anyone for that matter, has to prove their worthiness of the “C.”

Even if the Capitals chose to name Strome over Wilson as captain, there would still be a sense of continuity. The next captain taking over for Ovechkin would emerge from the team’s current core.

That’s something important. Players and fans need to see that this isn’t a “reset.” The move is just a natural progression as one era ends and another begins.
