FC Barcelona opened its LaLiga title defense with a commanding 5-0 road victory over Elche at the Estadio Manuel Martinez Valero, ESPN reports. The result gave Hansi Flick’s squad an emphatic start as it pursues a third consecutive league crown after finishing ahead of Real Madrid in each of the previous two seasons.
The champions also used the opener to honor Kobe Bryant. Bryant would have turned 48 on the day Barcelona first wore its black-and-purple Nike away uniform, transforming the convincing win into a fitting showcase for a collection built around his Mamba Mentality.
Barcelona’s New Kit Draws From Kobe Bryant’s Mindset
Barcelona’s 2026-27 away collection uses Bryant’s famous mentality as its foundation. The concept connects his competitive approach with total concentration, meticulous preparation, and an uncompromising pursuit of excellence on and off the field.
The jersey starts with a deep black shade before fading into an intense purple, per the FC Barcelona store page. That gradient gives the uniform a sleek finish while tying Barcelona’s identity to the colors most closely associated with Bryant’s basketball career.
Barcelona’s crest sits on the left side of the chest, while Bryant’s Mamba emblem occupies the right. Both appear in bright purple, with the Spotify logo featured in the center. Nike also incorporated Dri-FIT technology to move moisture away from the skin and help provide a lighter, more comfortable feel.
The timing gave the collaboration greater significance. Instead of merely revealing the uniform through promotional images, Barcelona introduced it during a competitive match and delivered the type of relentless performance that its Bryant-inspired campaign celebrates.
Raphinha and Barcelona Overwhelm Elche
Raphinha started the scoring after Victor Chust knocked him down inside the penalty area in the 14th minute. The Brazilian took the ensuing penalty himself and beat goalkeeper Matias Dituro to give Barcelona control.
He then created the second goal by finding Karim Adeyemi in the middle. The former Borussia Dortmund forward settled the pass and calmly opened his Barcelona account during his LaLiga debut.
Anthony Gordon made an immediate difference after entering from the bench for his first Barcelona appearance. The former Newcastle winger found Raphinha in space almost immediately, allowing the forward to score his second goal and stretch the advantage to three.
Gordon later passed up his own scoring opportunity and squared the ball to Fermin Lopez, who supplied Barcelona’s fourth in the 71st minute. Fermin struck again shortly afterward, spinning away from Federico Redondo before directing his finish into the bottom corner.
Elche’s best opportunity came when Brighton loanee Facundo Buonanotte hit the woodwork. Joan Garcia otherwise protected Barcelona’s clean sheet without facing a sustained threat.
Flick left new signing Rodri out of the matchday squad, while Gavi exited at halftime because of an injury. Pedri replaced him, although Gavi later returned to the field after the match, suggesting the issue may not have been serious.
Barcelona could hardly have scripted a stronger competitive debut for its Kobe Bryant collection. The five-goal victory paired the club’s title ambitions with a tribute centered on focus, determination, and elite performance.
