Dobbins is expected to start Thursday's contest on the mound against the Mets, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Dobbins will get a turn in the rotation after making two appearances out of the bullpen since his call-up from Triple-A Memphis on May 31. In those two outings, the 26-year-old combined to pitch 8.2 innings, allowing one run on eight hits and two walks while striking out 10 batters. Dobbins made his first start with St. Louis on April 30, allowing three runs on two hits and five walks while punching out four, and he'll look to do a better job limiting the free passes against New York on Thursday.
Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol told reporters Saturday that Dobbins' next appearance will be as the team's starter for Tuesday's series opener against the Mets, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports. The Cardinals will be going with a six-man rotation for at least one turn, with Dobbins slated to take the mound following the team's off-day Monday. The 26-year-old right-hander has pitched well in his two outings since being recalled from Triple-A Memphis this past Sunday. Dobbins has recorded a win and a save across those two outings, allowing one run on eight hits and two walks while striking out 10 across 8.2 innings.
Dobbins allowed one run on four hits and struck out four without walking a batter over 3.2 innings to earn the save in Sunday's 5-1 win over the Cubs. Dobbins was called up from Triple-A Memphis earlier in the day. While it was initially a possibility that he'd join the Cardinals' rotation, this long-relief outing, which saw him throw 41 of 61 pitches for strikes, will likely prevent him from making a start any time soon. Dobbins has given up four runs with an 8:5 K:BB over eight innings in two major-league appearances this season. He's sporting a 3.43 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 33:14 K:BB across 44.2 innings as a starter for Memphis. At this time, it's unclear if Dobbins will remain in the majors -- he'll likely be unavailable for a few days, but he was able to give all of the Cardinals' other relievers a day off Sunday.
