Cole Winn: Breaking News

Winn (0-1) took the loss against Pittsburgh on Wednesday, allowing three runs on two hits while striking out one over one-third of an inning. Winn entered the ninth inning of a 4-4 game and gave up hits to the first two batters before allowing a run on a fielder's choice. The rest of the damage came after he was removed, as Jalen Beeks surrendered a three-run shot to Oneil Cruz. Winn is part of the Rangers' late-game crew but has recently hit a rough patch; he's allowed three runs in two of his last four outings. After a scoreless 7.2 innings to start the season, Winn has pitched to a 16.20 ERA over 3.1 subsequent frames.

Winn earned the save in Wednesday's 3-0 win over the Mariners, allowing one hit and striking out one in a scoreless ninth inning. Winn became the third Rangers pitcher to record a save this season as he worked around a leadoff single to cap the shutout victory. Texas' ninth-inning plan has been fluid early this year, as Winn, Jakob Junis, Chris Martin and Robert Garcia are in the mix for closing duties. However, Winn is certainly making his case for the job -- after posting a 1.51 ERA over 41.2 innings last year, the right-hander has delivered 5.1 scoreless frames to open the 2026 campaign.

Winn (shoulder) threw a live batting practice session during Monday's full-squad workout, Matthew Postins of SI.com reports. Winn closed the past season on the injured list after sustaining a right rotator cuff strain, but he seems to have made a full recovery from the issue during the offseason and doesn't look to be under any restrictions in camp. The right-hander is coming off a strong 2025 campaign in which he posted a 1.51 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in 41.2 innings out of the bullpen, but a lack of overpowering stuff (10 SwSt%, 21.6 K%) may prevent him from garnering serious consideration for the Rangers' unsettled closer role.
