Elvis Alvarado: Breaking News

The Athletics optioned Alvarado to Triple-A Las Vegas on Saturday. Alvarado was roughed up in his last outing against the White Sox on Friday, when he allowed four runs on three hits and three walks while striking out three across two innings. That game rose his season numbers to an 8.38 ERA and 1.86 WHIP over 9.2 innings, so Alvarado will head down to the minors to regain some form. The A's recalled Mason Barnett from Las Vegas in a corresponding move.

Alvarado allowed two hits and a walk across a scoreless inning in Thursday's Cactus League loss to the Mariners. Alvarado worked into a jam in the eighth inning by loading the bases but escaped without allowing a run. This marked the right-hander's first outing back with the Athletics after tossing 1.2 scoreless innings across two appearances for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic. Coming off a 2025 season in which he posted a 3.19 ERA and 1.32 WHIP across 42.1 innings, Alvarado is in line to be part of the Athletics' Opening Day bullpen and could see save opportunities at some point with the club planning to operate with a closer-by-committee approach, though he has yet to record his first big-league save.

Alvarado allowed no hits and a walk with no strikeouts over 1.1 scoreless innings Saturday against Kansas City. Alvarado entered in the fifth inning and recorded the out he was brought in for, then worked through the sixth while allowing just one baserunner. The hard-throwing righty has been sharp down the stretch, tossing 6.1 scoreless innings over his past five appearances and posting a 1.86 ERA across nine outings in September. In his rookie season overall, he owns a 3.27 ERA and 1.33 WHIP across 36 games and 41.1 innings.
