The Pirates released Cabbage on Monday. It's not clear whether this is the Pirates simply clearing 40-man roster space or if Cabbage might have a deal lined up overseas. The 27-year-old was a waiver claim by Pittsburgh in November after he slashed .209/.253/.337 with a 37.4 percent strikeout rate with the Astros during the 2024 season.
The Pirates claimed Cabbage off waivers from the Astros on Monday, Ari Alexander of KPRC 2 Houston reports. Cabbage, 27, slashed just .209/.253/.337 with a 37.4 percent strikeout rate this season with the Astros. He's shown big power and some speed in the minors and the Pirates will hope they can get more out of the outfielder at the major-league level.
The Astros optioned Cabbage to Triple-A Sugar Land on Wednesday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Cabbage went 0-for-2 with two strikeouts upon being promoted from Triple-A on Monday, and he'll now head back to the minors after only two days with Houston. His roster spot will presumably be given to Ben Gamel, who was claimed off waivers from the Mets on Tuesday and is slated to join the Astros in Baltimore on Thursday.
