Welcome back to the dating pool, Rory McIlroy.
After a very public break-up with tennis star Caroline Wozniacki, which included a broken engagement, a phone call and a long case of he-said-she-said, the Irish native has seemingly found a brand-new love interest. McIlroy was recently spotted out with Erica Stoll, a PGA employee, he first met in 2012. The couple was seen holding hands during the Irish Open this year and the interest in Stoll has skyrocketed ever since.
The pair have reportedly taken their relationship to the next level after reports surfaced that the couple is engaged. According to the BBC, McIlroy proposed at the Eiffel Tower.
Here’s what you need to know about the American and her relationship with McIlroy:
Stoll is the Manager of Championship Volunteer Operations at the PGA of America
Stoll, who was born in America, has been around golf far longer than she’s dated McIlroy. In fact, it was golf that first led to the pair being introduced in 2012.
It was Stoll, 27, who famously saved McIlroy from missing his singles match tee time during the 2012 Ryder Cup. She discovered that the World No. 1 was not on site for his upcoming time and actually arranged for a police escort to bring him to the greens. A source close to McIlroy told The Sunday Independent that the two recently reconnected over their mutual love of golf:
The fact that she has a big interest in golf is an important factor – and it’s not just a case that she has sparked an interest in the game since meeting Rory. In fact she is every bit as obsessed with golf as him.
Sometimes, it seems, it pays to bring your work life home with you.
McIlroy Has Said He is ‘Very Happy’ With Stoll
Although McIlroy and Stoll have, reportedly, been together since New Years, the golf star has only recently confirmed that he’s even in a relationship. McIlroy didn’t specify Stoll as the other half of that relationship but did give some insight into his recent forays into romance in an interview with the Times of London:
I am very happy in my love life. We haven’t really been putting it out there. She is from America, which is why I like to spend time in Palm Beach. The past six or seven months have been really nice. That part of my life is going great.
McIlroy went on to add that his new relationship has helped him on the golf course as well, telling the paper, “If everything off the golf course is good, it allows you to be better on it.” He’ll get the chance to prove that sentiment this weekend when he tees off at the PGA Championship.
