Chile have had a tough opening round as defending Copa America champions, but a positive result against Panama will put them through to the next round.
After being beaten by top-ranked Argentina, Chile needed a controversial penalty to take three points over Bolivia. Unfortunately for Panama, their 5-0 defeat to Argentina ruins any chance of them advancing on tiebreaker, which is total goal differential.
If Chile want to right the ship and make another deep run at this tournament, they need to feed their stars. Alexis Sanchez and Arturo Vidal, who play for two of the top clubs in Europe, have had far too few opportunities in two matches. Chile don’t play the same style last year as they did under Jorge Sampaoli, but new manager Juan Antonio Pizzi should take advantage of his athletes before they make an early exit.
Panama would surprise everyone with a win here. They played well against Argentina until Messi came off the bench, at which point they were no match for the world’s best player. Top striker Blas Perez will not be available for this match after two yellow cards in the team’s first two matches.
