Liverpool are winners of four straight league fixtures, their longest run under Jurgen Klopp, and they’re favored to win again Monday against Manchester United.
It’s a rivalry between the two biggest clubs in English football, with a combined 87 major trophies raised between the two clubs.
Liverpool may have the better record, but United has owned the fixture lately. They’ve won four straight league meetings over Liverpool, and were the last team to win and keep a clean sheet at Anfield after a 1-0 victory in January. In total the sides met four times last season, including twice in March for Europa League matches.
Liverpool’s defense will be nearly at full strength on Monday, but the loss of Wijnaldum will affect Klopp’s team selection. Clyne and Lovren have been cleared to return, and Emre Can could make his first league start of the season. Wijnaldum was injured while playing with Netherlands over the international break.
Last season, United were criticized by playing too conservative at times. That’s changed under Mourinho, but the defense is not as solid as it was last season. United currently sit seventh in the table, and have gone four games without a clean sheet.
Liverpool have been solid on the ball this season, but they’ve been even better without it. It’s that defensive pressure that will determine Monday’s outcome, especially if Liverpool go ahead early.
