After a slow start to CONMEBOL qualifying, Argentina have battled their way back to fifth place and a playoff spot. Thursday they face a tough task against Chile, who have been their bogey team in recent years.
With the memory of Copa America Centenario still fresh, Argentina need to keep compiling strong results against Chile. Argentina haven’t missed a World Cup since 1970, and they have a favorable schedule remaining, but Messi and Co. are right on the edge of missing Russia 2018.
For all the talk about Argentina being on the brink, La Roja sit just one point ahead of them in fourth place. Three road losses have stunted Chile’s ascent to the top of South America, and Chile are without key players for Thursday night. Arturo Vidal is still suspended, while Alexis Sanchez will miss the match with an injury.
