Storyline to Watch

Joe Gibbs Racing–after tallying 12 victories a season ago–is winless so far in 2017, but this could be a good place for that to change.

Kyle Busch, who has four wins in this race, 15 Top-5’s in 23 career starts at Richmond and by far the best career average finish of any driver at this track, is likely the team’s best chance, but Denny Hamlin also has plenty of success here (three career wins at this track, including last year’s fall race), while Matt Kenseth will start on the pole.

“It’s not going to happen overnight, it’s not going to happen this week, it won’t happen in a month,” Hamlin said about his team turning things around. “Some things are going to take a long time for us to get better at. But, I’m very confident that when push comes to shove, we’re in September starting the (Playoffs), we should be hopefully back where we were, if not better.”

Of course, another major storyline this week will surround Dale Earnhardt Jr., who officially begins his farewell tour after announcing he will retire at the end of the season. Junior has just one Top-5 finish this season and ranks 24th in the driver standings, but he’ll be getting extra attention for the rest of the year.
