Dabo Swinney and the Clemson Tigers have been one of the best recent programs in college football. For years, they were a yearly national championship contender.

Unfortunately, the last couple of years have seen the program fall off.

Heading into the 2025 college football season, Swinney and the Tigers were widely expected to be a top-tier national championship contender. However, by the end of the season, the future of the longtime head coach was being called into question.

Right off the bat, Clemson lost the season opener to the LSU Tigers. The season never rebounded from there. When all was said and done, the Tigers mustered up a 7-6 record and missed the College Football Playoff.

Keeping that in mind, rumors have been swirling about Swinney’s future with the program moving forward.

Dabo Swinney’s Future at Clemson Receives Concerning Outlook

The Athletic’s Ralph Russo took a look at early predictions for the 2026 college football season. He predicted that Swinney and Clemson will decide to part ways after the season comes to an end.

“Next season will be Dabo Swinney’s last as Clemson coach,” Russo wrote. “He and the school agree to part ways after another mediocre season.”

At the end of the day, Swinney has to get the program back to winning. No head coach is immune from change if the wins aren’t coming. The Tigers expect to win and that hasn’t been happening of late.

Seeing Clemson being coached by anyone other than Swinney would feel very strange. Sadly, the reality is that change will come at some point in time for every program and head coach.

Taking a Look at Swinney’s Track Record With the Tigers

Swinney became the head coach of the Clemson football program back in the 2008 season. Since that point in time, he has led the Tigers to a 187-53 overall record and has won two national championships.

As college football has continued changing, especially with the transfer portal and NIL, Swinney has struggled to keep up. He has failed to adapt his philosophy to remain a top program. That has been the beginning of what could be the end for him.

That being said, Clemson still has time to turn things around. Swinney is still an elite football coach. If he can adapt and start pushing the right buttons, the Tigers could return to dominance under his leadership.

Looking around the nation, there are few head coaches better on the field than Swinney. He finds ways to put his players in positions for success. Over the years, Clemson has been excellent at recruiting high school talent.

It will be interesting to see what the 2026 has in store for both the Tigers and Swinney. Should another disappointing year come out of it, the two sides parting ways is a legitimate option worth keeping a close eye on.
