Just a few short years ago, the Clemson Tigers and head coach Dabo Swinney were the cream of the crop in college football.

Each and every year, the program was expected to be a National Championship contender. Those expectations have fallen off over the last few seasons.

Swinney has struggled to adapt his style to the ever-changing landscape of the NCAA. He has been unable to adopt the strategies required to be successful in the era of NIL and the transfer portal. That has left Clemson behind the eight ball.

Last season, the Tigers were expected to be one of the top teams in the nation. However, the reality of the 2025 season was anything but positive. Clemson didn’t make the College Football Playoff and finished the year with a 7-6 record.

Moving into the future, the Tigers and Swinney have received a brutal outlook.

Clemson, Dabo Swinney Facing Grim Future

Josh Pate weighed in with his thoughts on the Clemson football program. During his show on Thursday, Pate made it clear that he doesn’t see the Tigers rebounding anytime soon.

“Clemson was so razor-sharp despite not getting battle-tested. That was a huge testament to the way Dabo ran Clemson,” Pate said.

“Now, this sounds like a Dabo love fest. It’s about to take a very sharp downward turn. I don’t know that it’s that way anymore.”

He continued on, sharing what he believes the future has in store for Clemson and Swinney.

“So now going into 2026, the talent level has fallen off,” Pate said. “The players aren’t there. The players are not there. They have finished outside the top 20 in the rivals team rankings the last two seasons. They’re not a major portal player at all. The players just aren’t there. They don’t match rosters with Miami. They’re not even close anymore. So Clemson’s not going to be the one that pulls the sled for you anymore.”

Dabo Swinney’s Future Has Become a Major Question Mark

Due to the program falling off the map over the last few years, Swinney’s future with Clemson is very much uncertain.

CBS Sports analyst Brad Crawford named Swinney among the top 10 college football head coaches under the most pressure in 2026. There is a strong chance that if the Tigers struggle this coming season, that they could make a coaching change.

Parting ways with the longtime head coach would be an extremely difficult decision for Clemson to make. Since taking over the team back in 2008, Swinney has led the program to a 187-53 overall record and two National Championship wins.

Moving on from that kind of head coach would be a tough day. Unfortunately, that could be the reality of the situation if Swinney can’t find a way to turn the Tigers around in 2026.
