Clemson’s 36-24 road victory over Florida State brought immediate clarity to its postseason pursuit, moving the Tigers to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the ACC while placing them one win shy of bowl eligibility.

Securing that sixth victory would preserve head coach Dabo Swinney’s 21-season bowl streak—the fourth-longest active run across the FBS. However, while the Tigers solidified their postseason trajectory, national prognosticators remain widely divided on where Clemson will spend December, offering scenarios ranging from marquee matchups against ranked powerhouses to tropical mid-tier destinations.

Sun Bowl Stability vs. High-Octane Beavers

ESPN’s Mark Schlabach held firm on his projection, keeping Clemson slotted into the Old El Paso Sun Bowl on Dec. 31 against Oregon State.

Both programs now stand at 5-3. While Clemson rallied in Tallahassee, the Beavers saw a five-game winning streak snapped in a 38-22 loss to Fresno State. Despite that stumble, Oregon State poses a formidable statistical challenge. The Beavers feature the nation’s leading passer in quarterback Braden Atkinson, who has thrown for nearly 3,000 yards, alongside true freshman wide receiver Jesse Legree. Legree currently paces the FBS in both receiving yards (1,110) and receiving touchdowns (14) through eight games.

A Charlotte Rematch with Rebuilding Penn State?

Fellow ESPN analyst Kyle Bonagura overhauled his forecast entirely. After previously projecting Clemson to play Georgia State in the inaugural TransPerfect San Juan Bowl, Bonagura now sends the Tigers to the Duke’s Mayo Bowl at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte on Dec. 26.

His projected opponent is Penn State, which would produce an immediate rematch of last year’s Pinstripe Bowl. That Nittany Lions squad, however, shares little resemblance to this year’s roster. Following the firing of head coach James Franklin, Penn State brought in former Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell and weathered heavy roster movement via the transfer portal.

After entering the season ranked No. 18, Penn State has dropped four of its last five contests, tumbling to 4-4 overall and 1-4 in Big Ten competition. While Clemson landing in Charlotte aligns cleanly with ACC bowl affiliations, Big Ten involvement in the game remains rare, with only three conference programs selected for the game over the past decade.

Holiday Bowl Upside vs. San Juan Scenarios

Sports Illustrated’s Bryan Fischer maintained a high-ceiling projection for Clemson, linking the Tigers to No. 18 USC in the Will & Trust Holiday Bowl.

The Trojans improved to 7-2 after knocking off No. 11 Ohio State. Despite looming tests against No. 6 Indiana and No. 5 UCLA, USC appears firmly positioned for an eight- or nine-win finish typical of Holiday Bowl participants. For Clemson, securing a trip to San Diego would likely require a clean sweep through November to climb the conference pecking order.

Conversely, CBS Sports analyst Brad Crawford pivoted away from a Sun Bowl pairing with Washington, projecting the Tigers to Puerto Rico for the San Juan Bowl against Marshall. The Sun Belt squad sits at 5-3 overall and 2-2 in league play, but lopsided losses—including a 45-17 defeat against James Madison and a 45-0 shutout against Penn State—make the matchup an awkward fit from both a competitive and television viewership standpoint.

On3 Looks Toward Annapolis

On3 insider Brett McMurphy also backed off an earlier San Juan Bowl projection against Louisiana, shifting Clemson to the Freedom Mortgage Military Bowl in Annapolis to face UTSA.

Neither program has ever appeared in the Military Bowl, but UTSA’s current trajectory makes the pairing questionable. The Roadrunners are 7-1 overall, 4-0 in American Athletic Conference action, and hold a lone loss to top-ranked Texas. A 10-2 or 11-1 finish and an AAC Championship Game appearance would typically place UTSA well above the Military Bowl’s draft tier, though similar situations have unfolded before. In 2023, an 11-1 Tulane squad fell in the AAC title game to SMU before dropping to the Military Bowl against Virginia Tech.

With four regular-season games remaining, Clemson’s final postseason landing spot will hinge heavily on whether its November slate produces a sustained surge or continued turbulence.
