Days before the start of the Ryder Cup, Scottie Scheffler shared a candid moment with the media, revealing his relationship with Donald Trump. The president is expected to be in attendance at the upcoming Ryder Cup to cheer on Team USA, and Scheffler detailed his experience with Trump.
“The president’s kind of funny,” Scheffler remarked during a September 23, press conference. “He loves the game of golf. He loves supporting golfers, and I get a call or a text from him sometimes after wins. And he just loves the game of golf and he’s one of those guys when you’re around him, he does such a good job of almost like feeding confidence into everybody around him.
“That was one of the things I noticed a lot with the little bit of time I spent with him is he treats everybody the same and treats people with the utmost respect,” Scheffler continued.
“Whether you’re the person serving us lunch or the caddie on the golf course or the guy who is the president of the club that we’re at, he treats everybody like they’re the greatest person in the world. And I don’t think he has any plans to address us as a team (at the Ryder Cup), but I’m sure if things go well, we’ll hear from him.”
Donald Trump to Slightly Delay Arrival at Ryder Cup: Report
It appears there have been some slight changes to Trump’s plans for the Ryder Cup. Trump was initially expected to greet Team USA at the first tee, but now the president is going to delay his arrival for later in the day to avoid creating an issue for patrons entering Bethpage Black.
“The Ryder Cup camps have been informed that Donald Trump will delay his arrival at Bethpage Black on the opening day to ensure that there is no repeat of the security issues that affected the US Open men’s tennis final,” The Telegraph’s James Corrigan detailed in a September 23, story titled, “Donald Trump to delay Ryder Cup arrival after US Open chaos.”
“It was believed that the US president would be on the first tee here at this New York venue to greet the first match in the opening session that begins at 7.10am local time. But as reported two weeks ago, the PGA of America, which oversees the US arm of the Ryder Cup, politely inquired if it would be possible for the fanatical golfer to come to the course later,” Corrigan added.
“… It appears he has agreed and will make his entrance at lunchtime before the afternoon fourballs tee off just after noon.”
Donald Trump Urged Keegan Bradley To Be a Playing Captain at the Ryder Cup for Team USA
Trump has been vocal about his excitement for the Ryder Cup. Back in August, Trump took to social media to express his opinion that Keegan Bradley should play while also serving as Team USA’s captain.
“Keegan Bradley should DEFINITELY be on the American Ryder Cup Team – As Captain!!!” Trump said in an August 23, post to Truth Social. “He is an AMAZING guy. It will be a great Ryder Cup. At the invite of the PGA Tour, I will be there on Tournament Friday!!! President DJT.”
Ultimately, Bradley opted against playing and instead will focus on being the United States captain. Europe is a +170 underdog, while the United States sits as a -150 favorite to win in the Ryder Cup odds, per DraftKings.
