The Philadelphia Phillies have regained confidence, securing seven wins in their last eight games. It hasn’t come easily, but following Thursday’s 2-1 victory over the Miami Marlins, a glaring defensive stat has been unveiled.

Trea Turner has committed only one error in his last 45 games for the Phillies, per Jeff Kerr of CBS Sports. That would bring the three-time All-Star’s total to just five on the season.

Turner’s footwork at shortstop has sharpened mightily since his disappointing 2024 campaign at the position. His first step is faster, and his reads are crisper. The little adjustments have led to his recent perfection with his glove.

It couldn’t be happening at a better time, as the Phillies prepare for arguably their most pivotal series of the season against the New York Mets.

Ranking Among the Best Defenders

Defense wins championships—or at least gives teams the chance to compete deep into October. Turner’s reliability helps the Phillies at a time when fielding is overshadowed by plate appearances.

Phillies pitchers are already benefiting. With the help of Turner’s confident glove behind them, Mick Abel, Ranger Suarez and Cristopher Sanchez all were able to record wins in the Marlins series.

Turner’s playing at a complete level, slashing .300/.359/.453 in 73 appearances. Critics used to dismiss him as a one-trick hero — fast legs, good bat. But he’s proving he can be all of it for Philadelphia this year and in the playoffs.

The Phillies are watching game tape closely. They’re seeing one player lock in his craft. That kind of presence on the field breeds confidence not just in teammates, but in the organization’s deeper faith in both veteran leaders and rising stars like Otto Kemp.

Turner’s Fielding Is A Game-Changer For Phillies

In the modern game, flashy metrics and power numbers grab attention. But in high-stakes wins, it’s the fundamentals — defense, pitching, timely hitting — that decide a series. Turner’s defensive stretch is the quiet echo of that old-school truth.

Turner, who vowed to improve at the position this season, has more than made true on that promise. The high-level play has lived up to the 11-year, $300 million contract, and is winning innings quietly.

“Yeah, like I said I think the last time I talked about defense, I feel like I’ve played good all year for the most part,” Turner said, per Tim Kelly of OnPattison.com. “Obviously, there’s a couple errors that are gonna happen here and there, and you try to limit those as much as possible. As far as defense for the season, I feel like it’s been really good. Just trying to continue doing what I’m doing, and see where it ends up at the end of the year.”

For the Phillies, who currently sit tied for first with the Mets in the NL East, Turner’s performances are becoming a safety net and a launching pad.

For Turner, it’s another stroke in a career being quietly, steadily defined. And for baseball fans, it’s a sign that the spark of a quality fielder still hasn’t faded in the modern game.
