The Seattle Mariners announced that young shortstop Colt Emerson will undergo season ending surgery on his wrist this Wednesday. Emerson went on the injured list after the Yankees series a couple weeks ago. Originally, the organization planned to demote him to Triple-A Tacoma so he could continue to improve on his swing. However, Emerson then told the organization that he would want to get his wrist examined as it continued to bother him. He originally hurt his wrist in Spring Training, but the season continued with him trying to play through it.
Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times tweeted: “Colt Emerson will have wrist surgery on Wednesday.”
Through 69 games and 241 plate appearances, Emerson batted .190/.246/.335 with eight home runs in his first extended stint at the Major League level. Yet, Emerson entered the season as a consensus top 10 prospect in all of the minor leagues.
With so many up and coming shortstops approaching the majors, Emerson was one of several prospects to receive a multi-year extension. The Seattle Mariners signed Emerson to an eight-year $95 million contract early in the season. With his surgery imminent, Emerson will miss the rest of the season including the playoffs if the Mariners can make it.

As Emerson’s rookie season ends, it confirms another massive disappointment for the Seattle Mariners in 2026.
The Seattle Mariners continue their tragic 2026 campaign with an important series about to begin against the Philadelphia Phillies. The Mariners originally brought up Emerson in May to help jumpstart their struggling lineup, yet he only added to those troubles. Another reason to bring him up was to replace J.P. Crawford at shortstop as his defense regresses each year at this point.
As time went on, Emerson’s failures at the plate could not be ignored by the organization. They wanted him to go to Triple-A Tacoma, but he opted to receive an examination on his wrist, creating the possibility of a season ending surgery. Seattle Mariners President of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto disclosed to reporters that he wished Emerson informed the front office and coaching staff of how bothersome the injury was. The team brought up Brock Rodden as a result.
Dipoto said, “I wish he would have been a little more upfront if it was bothering him that much. He should have said something.”

Emerson’s upside still seems clear despite some struggles to begin his Major League Baseball career.
The Seattle Mariners still have a strong farm system full of blossoming prospect as seen with Kade Anderson’s recent debut. With a fresh offseason and time to recover, Mariners fans should expect to see the Emerson they envisioned when dreaming about the year before this season.
That being said, 2026 also included world series aspirations, and the team currently falls dramatically short of those marks. With Crawford set to return from the injured this in the coming days, the Mariners find themselves in a familiar situation prior to Emerson’s arrival.
