The St. Louis Cardinals are coming off a strong series against the New York Yankees, where they picked up a series win, and enjoy an off day on Thursday. St. Louis will host the Colorado Rockies in their next series.
Although the MLB trade deadline has come and gone, there are still ways to acquire players across the league. The most common way is to claim players off waivers after said player is cut from their current team.
On Thursday, the Cardinals got in on the waiver wire fun by claiming 3-year player Everson Pereira from the White Sox. Everson Pereira was DFA’d by the Chicago White Sox on Monday when the team acquired catcher Joey Bart.

MLBTR.com’s Darragh McDonald broke the news of the waiver claim, which was originally announced by the Cardinals themselves:
“The Cardinals announced that they have claimed outfielder Everson Pereira off waivers from the White Sox.”
“The Cards had a couple of 40-man vacancies and don’t need to make a corresponding move in that regard. Pereira is out of options and will need a spot on the active roster when he reports to the team.”
Because Pereira is out of options, keep an eye out for a corresponding move from the Cardinals, like a release or DFA to make space for Everson Pereira.
Everson Pereira, 25, has played in parts of three MLB seasons in his career. 2026 was his first season with the White Sox. He batted .225 across 80 at-bats with four home runs, 5 doubles, 11 RBI, and an OPS+ of 100.

Looking at Everson Pereira’s MLB Career

Everson Pereira debuted with the New York Yankees in 2023. He recorded 93 at-bats that season, but hit just .151 so he was let go by the Yanks.
He did not play in MLB in 2024, and returned in 2025 with the Tampa Bay Rays in ’25. Last season with the Rays, Everson Pereira batted .138 across 60+ at-bats, so his stint with the White Sox this season has easily been the most productive in his career.
Across 238 total ABs in the Majors, Pereira carries an average of .172 with a bWAR of -0.9, 6 HRs, 29 RBI, and an OPS+ of 49.
He will likely serve as a defensive replacement for St. Louis or a pinch-runner since he can not be optioned to the minors.
