The Toronto Blue Jays have started their final series against the Philadelphia Phillies. The weather delayed the start. Before Friday’s game, Blue Jays reliever Yimi Garcia was given an unfortunate diagnosis.
The Blue Jays have found themselves crawling to Philly after a soul-crushing 3-2 extra-innings loss to the Chicago Cubs. This loss occurred a day after they defeated the Houston Astros 5-4 in a 10-inning clash.
UPDATE: The Blue Jays defeated the Phillies by a 5-4 final score. Jose Soriano pitched 4.2 innings in his Blue Jays debut, earning three strikeouts. Matt Waldron recorded a strikeout and got the hold, while Tyler Rogers earned the save.
Following this victory, they currently sit 3.5 games back of a Wild Card position.
Toronto Blue Jays News: Relief Pitcher Yimi Garcia Receives Thoracic Outlet Syndrome Diagnosis
Mitch Bannon of The Athletic took to social media to share the news about Garcia.
“Yimi Garcia has been diagnosed with thoracic outlet syndrome. Will decide if surgery is needed in the next few days. His season is likely over,” Bannon shared in a tweet on August 7th, 2026.
Most recently, Garcia was on a rehab assignment with the Dunedin Blue Jays.
What is Thoracic Outlet Syndrome?
According to Cleveland Clinic, Thoracic Outlet Syndrome “occurs when there’s compression of nerves or blood vessels in your lower neck and upper chest. Symptoms include pain, tingling, and numbness in your arms and hands. Common causes include vigorous arm movements (especially in sports), traumatic injuries and anatomical variations you’re born with.”
Yimi Garcia’s 436-Game Career
Garcia has played 436 MLB games with several different franchises. In addition to the Blue Jays, he played for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Miami Marlins, Houston Astros, and Seattle Mariners.
The 35-year-old reliever has been playing since 2014. Yet, he has only played in nine games this season, pitching 7.2 innings in the minors on various rehab assignments.
Garcia recorded 89 holds, 29 saves, and 456 strikeouts in his career. He also owns a 3.61 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP.
Where Do Things Go From Here For Yimi Garcia and the Blue Jays?
Garcia is in the second year of a two-year $15 million contract that he signed on December 10th, 2024.
Despite the Blue Jays primarily being sellers at this year’s MLB Trade Deadline, Toronto retained Garcia’s services. This could have been due to the uncertainty around his injury at the time.
Now that the Blue Jays have clarity on Garcia, the organization can map out where to go from here.
As for Garcia, he has many options still available to him.
For starters, he could express interest in returning to the Blue Jays. Secondly, he could try to continue his career with a different team. Or, he could call it a career and find something else to do with his time.
One way or another, his career and potential role with a baseball team will not be the same ever again.
