The Meg Thee Stallion and Klay Thompson breakup has been the loudest story on the internet this week, and everyone has an opinion. But one reaction stood out, and it came from the music world, not the sports world.
A clip shared on X by @MusicConnoisseu, shows hip-hop media personality DJ Akademiks reacting live on stream to a video from online commentator Madame Joyce, pausing it in between to share his thoughts with his chat.
Madame Joyce Claims Meg Thee Stallion Made Klay Thompson a Star
She laid it out plainly, and she was not shy about it.
“We didn’t know Klay Thompson before Meg Thee Stallion. We didn’t know Stefon Diggs before Cardi B. And while these guys have more money than these girls, these girls have social and global influence. Meg Thee Stallion made Klay a global star, whether he wants to admit it or not. These men like to use these women for come-ups and for social status, because, like, don’t ever get it twisted, girls. Social currency is still a currency. If you are well-known in your circle and you are well-respected, a guy can use that for social come-up because being with you makes him look good.”
Joyce’s point was not just about Klay. It was about how men recognize a woman’s value, sometimes before she does.
“I think sometimes the insecurity that we have in ourselves do not allow us to see what we are actually worth, what our currency is, but a man can see it. A man can see your value economically before you.”
DJ Akademiks Defends Klay Thompson and Pushes Back on Meg Thee Stallion’s Global Star Claim
Akademiks was watching the same clip, and he was not impressed. The Spotify podcast host and one of hip-hop’s most followed media voices jumped in, arguing that the whole framing was backwards. In his view, being with Meg did not elevate Klay’s image at all.
He said the idea of Meg making Klay look good was laughable. In his view, Klay looked like the most clueless guy in the NBA for committing to someone with her reputation, and that the other players were not exactly quiet about it when he was not around.
He also took aim at the idea that players around the league were impressed. The way he told it, guys in those rooms were not nodding in approval, they were shaking their heads, because walking in with someone who carries that kind of reputation is not a come-up in that world.
Akademiks closed it out simply after letting the last bit of Joyce’s video play.
“Yo, I ain’t gonna lie, it’s like a comedy show when I’m watching this type of s**t, bro.”
The whole exchange really comes down to two very different ways of looking at the same situation. Joyce sees Meg as the one who brought value to the relationship. Akademiks sees it the opposite way. Either way, Klay has stayed silent through all of it, and with the Mavericks‘ season already done, this story is the only thing following him right now.
