While a majority of teams in both conferences have already clinched their final postseason seeding for the 2026 NBA playoffs, a few teams have yet to confirm where they’ll sit in a potential championship run.
Here are the potential playoff scenarios that have yet to play out, but will soon be finalized on the final day of the 2025-26 NBA regular season:
Western Conference Playoff Scenarios:
The Nuggets are currently in the three seed in the West, one game ahead of the Lakers in the fourth seed, as both teams have yet to clinch a final spot.
With a Los Angeles win over Utah and a Denver loss to the Spurs, the Lakers would jump up to third in the standings. That would mean they would end up playing the Timberwolves, a team that dominated them in the playoffs last year.
At the same time, their current expected matchup against Houston feels like a more reasonable, potentially easier series, so while the Nuggets have a loaded injury report, Los Angeles getting a win in the final day of the regular season might not be the best thing for them.
Additionally, the Trail Blazers and Clippers have yet to finalize their seeds in the Play-In Tournament. The teams are tied with the same record, but Portland holds the tiebreaker, meaning if both teams finish with a loss or win, the standings would stay the same. The Clippers can only jump up in the standings if they win and a Blazers loss.
Eastern Conference Playoff Scenarios:
In the East, there are several playoffs and Play-In seeds yet to be finalized. The Hawks and Raptors are one game apart from each other, but if Atlanta wins, they will hold onto the fifth seed in the East.
With a loss, and an Orlando, Philadelphia, and Charlotte win, Toronto could fall to eighth in the West. The Magic could also finish anywhere from sixth to eighth, depending on their game and how others finish, as is the case with the 76ers.
The Hornets could hold onto the ninth seed with a win, but a loss and a Miami victory, the two teams would swap spots, as the Heat would jump to ninth, and Charlotte would fall to tenth.
Besides all the teams mentioned, every other franchise has its playoff seeding locked up.
Additionally, one storyline to follow will be Nikola Jokic, as he is questionable for the Nuggets on Sunday, but if he plays at least 20 minutes, he will qualify for end-of-season awards.
Still, there are a ton of players that will be sitting in the NBA games today, on the final day of the regular season, as most teams have already clinched their playoff position. In the lead-up to all 15 of the last games of the year, there are at least 168 players already listed as ‘out,’ and at least 13 of the 30 teams are sitting at least seven players on their roster.
The 2026 NBA Playoffs begin on April 18, while the 2026 NBA Play-In Tournament will take place from April 14-17.
