Lions Make Quarterback Announcement Before Season Kickoff

The Detroit Lions are down to just two quarterbacks as the season approaches, and Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes are talking about it.

The Detroit Lions are just days away from beginning their 2025-26 season, and all eyes are on the franchise, since it marks Dan Campbell’s first run without offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. Johnson, of course, is with the Chicago Bears, and Glenn is with the New York Jets, so both have taken golden opportunities, but that leaves the Lions with a very different-looking coaching staff.

The Detroit Lions will face the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field on Sunday, September 7, 2025, at 4:25 p.m. Eastern time. The Lions and Packers rivalry has always been epic, but this year, it’s at a fever pitch, since Green Bay just traded with the Dallas Cowboys for defensive end Micah Parsons. The Cowboys traded Parsons in exchange for two first round picks from Green Bay and defensive tackle Kenny Clark.

The Lions have made their own changes before the season kickoff, one of those being letting go of backup quarterback Hendon Hooker. So, they only have two quarterbacks on their roster right now: franchise quarterback Jared Goff and backup signal-caller Kyle Allen. But, that’s going to change.

Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes Talks Detroit Lions Quarterback Situation

The Lions have a quarterback problem, but they’re in good hands with Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes. Speaking to the press, Holmes doubled down on the team’s quarterback situation.

“I thought we had another plan in place that didn’t happen; it fell through. So that’s why you’ve got to just keep things close to his vest, because you never know until it happens,” Holmes said. “But we’re still working through actively. It could happen today, it could happen tomorrow. We will add another quarterback.”

So, Homes announced that, yes, the Lions will absolutely add a new quarterback to their roster. Hopefully they find someone sooner rather than later.

“We’re looking for somebody, that if we need them, we know they can run the show,” Campbell, our favorite Metallica enthusiast, added. “They can run the offense, they can process the information more than, can we find a guy to develop that’s unknown, all of those.”

He added, “I’d rather have a guy, somebody that certainly if we’re familiar with or somebody you just know they get in the game, they’re going to get you in the right play, be smart with the football, and all of those things.”

It’s Not Surprising That the Detroit Lions Wanted a New Quarterback

It wasn’t a stunner that Campbell and Holmes let Hooker walk. Speaking to the press earlier in the offseason, Campbell hinted to the quarterback needing a “change of scenery.”

“If you do that (keep three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster), you lose depth with the D-line, or O-line, or a receiver, or a defensive back, or a linebacker. You get the point,” Campbell said. “So, how important is that relative to the other positions? And what’s hard is, look, you can call it what you want.”

He added, “When you have a year like we did last year, you get affected a little bit by it, it has an effect on the way you think and depth, depth, depth. We’ve got to make sure that we have the depth.”

So, time will tell who will head to the Motor City to serve as the Lions’ Q3. Let’s hope he’s someone the Detroit Lions can rely on in a pinch.
