The Kansas City Chiefs brought back veteran wide receiver Nikko Remigio in the winter, giving him a contract extension after two seasons of steady contributions on special teams.
But the receiver could face a battle to earn a spot this year, with one team reporter suggesting he’s on the wrong side of the roster bubble after the first week of training camp.
Nikko Remigio Below the Cut Line After Training Camp’s First Week
Reporter Ron Kopp Jr. of SB Nation’s Arrowhead Pride site predicted that the Chiefs would keep six wide receivers on their final roster, with Remigio hanging at No. 7 after the first week of practices. Kopp predicted that Rashee Rice would return to the No. 1 spot, followed by Xavier Worthy, Tyquan Thornton, Cyrus Allen, and Jalen Royals.
The fight for the final spot could come down to Remigio and Andrew Armstrong, he predicted.
“The competition at the receiver position, in terms of who will make the active roster, begins at No. 5,” Kopp wrote.
“With the uncertainty at the top of the depth chart, it seems like the team needs to keep more than five receivers. There’s more to find out about Royals and Armstrong, but that’s more than can be said about Remigio. He has maximized his role in Kansas City, and the return job should be handed off to Brashard Smith. Allen has lined up and caught punts and kicks as well.”
Remigio was an exclusive-rights free agent this winter, returning to the team with a new contract extension on the day the free agent market officially opened in March. Remigio made a strong impression in training camp in 2024, averaging 33.25 yards on kick returns and 21.0 yards on punts, though the numbers leveled off during the regular season.
A favorite among fans thanks in part to his electric preseason performances, Remigio held onto the primary return specialist spot in the 2025 season.
Kopp did add that Remigio has some factors working in his favor, including the approval of the team’s coaching staff.
“Special teams coordinator Dave Toub noted Armstrong as someone he is excited about ‘as a cover guy’ on Monday,” Kopp wrote. “He has also stepped up in the place of injured starting receivers this camp and has seen plenty of throws from Mahomes at practice. He appears to be more than the big-bodied, jumpball player that can fool Chiefs Kingdom at training camp.”
Rookie Andrew Armstrong Earning Praise
Armstrong has also made a strong bid for a roster spot, turning in some impressive performances at training camp after spending part of the 2025 season with the Detroit Lions on their practice squad.
Head coach Andy Reid said Armstrong has developed a good rapport with quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Justin Fields.
“Looks like the quarterback trusts him — both of them,” Reid said. “They trust him on his route running. He’s got good speed for a big kid, good transition — he’s not stiff coming out of breaks.”
