Former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson made an unexpected appearance with the Savannah Bananas on Sunday.

Quarterback Russell Wilson is still searching for his next NFL team. But he briefly joined a new team in a different sport Sunday.

Wilson made an appearance with the Savannah Bananas at Yankee Stadium on Sunday. The veteran signal-caller posted videos of the appearance on his X account.

“Fun times with the fans! My kids love the day!” Wilson posted on X. “Thanks Jesse Cole for the call!

“I remember you were my GM when I was 19 years old! Proud of the movement you’ve built!”

The other video Wilson posted was of himself with screaming fans, most of which were kids, in the background. The video also showed quarterback signing autographs for the kids.

The Savannah Bananas were at Yankee Stadium from April 25-26 with their 2026 Banana Ball World Tour. The event was sold out with more than 40,000 fans.

Wilson’s appearance with the Bananas came with his NFL future very much in doubt. The veteran quarterback hasn’t had much buzz about where he might play next season since the start of NFL free agency in early March.

In 2025, Wilson started three games for the New York Giants. He also appeared in three other contests in relief.

The prior season, Wilson made 11 starts, going 6-5 for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Former Steelers QB Russell Wilson Makes Savannah Bananas Appearance

There’s no doubting that the 2024 starting Steelers quarterback had a great time over the weekend. Based on his social media posts, he had a lot of fun with his family at Yankee Stadium and the Bananas.

That’s what the Bananas are all about — fun.

Wilson wasn’t just a random celebrity appearance for the makeshift Savannah baseball club. The NFL quarterback heard his name called in the MLB draft twice — in 2007 and 2010. He played second base at the lower-A level in the Colorado Rockies organization.

But few would also doubt that Wilson’s appearance had an alternative motive. Appearing at Yankee Stadium on Sunday gave the quarterback an opportunity to remain in the public eye right after the conclusion of the 2026 NFL Draft.

That’s important because Wilson is still hoping to sign with a team for the 2026 NFL season. There hasn’t appeared to be much interest in the veteran quarterback through nearly the first two months of free agency.

The Giants benched Wilson after he lost his first three games of last season. Wilson revealed after the regular season that he played through a serious injury during that time. But that hasn’t helped him gain any suitors.

Dating back to his Steelers tenure, Wilson has lost eight straight starts, including the postseason.

With the Giants, Wilson posted a 58% completion percentage with three touchdowns and three interceptions in six contests. He averaged seven yards per attempt.

Where Could Wilson Play in the 2026 NFL Season?

Wilson’s baseball appearance Sunday could work as a reminder to NFL teams that he’s available in free agency. But it’s not clear which organization might be interested.

Through the draft, 10 teams added rookie quarterbacks. Furthermore, a lot of other franchises signed undrafted signal-callers following the 2026 NFL Draft.

All of those teams essentially elected to do that instead of target Wilson, who will turn 38 years old in November.

The Steelers are the only team left with a starting job opening this offseason. But Mike McCarthy hasn’t expressed any known interest in Wilson. Instead, the Steelers appear to be Aaron Rodgers or bust in terms of signing a veteran quarterback this spring.

Wilson completed 63.7% of his passes for 2,482 yards with 16 touchdowns and five interceptions in 11 games with the Steelers during 2024. He also averaged 7.4 yards per attempt on his way to the Pro Bowl.

Wilson has earned 10 Pro Bowl nominations in his 14-year NFL career. He led the Seattle Seahawks to back-to-back Super Bowl appearances, including one win, in 2013-14.
