When considering the circumstances the San Francisco 49ers dealt with in 2025, it’s safe to say that they put together a pretty impressive campaign. Still, they did not end up finding a way to win the Super Bowl, meaning it’s back to the drawing board for the team as it attempts to get over the hump.

After losing defensive coordinator Robert Saleh to the Tennessee Titans, where he is the team’s new head coach, the Niners hired his replacement, former Atlanta Falcons head coach Raheem Morris, on Sunday. Less than 24 hours later, the Niners have announced a big move involving a key member of their front office, Al Guido.

While the Niners have not won a Super Bowl since 1995, the team has been one of the contenders almost every year over the past decade-plus. That’s due in large part to the work of the front office, which has consistently been able to load up the team’s roster with some of the best players in the NFL.

Guido has been a part of that group for quite some time now. After initially serving as San Francisco’s chief operating officer from 2014 to 2016, Guido was promoted to team president, which is a role he’s served in for the past 10 years. While he’s not directly involved with the 49ers’ roster-building efforts, he’s played a big role in getting events like Super Bowl LX to be hosted at Levi’s Stadium.

As a result of his continued strong work, a promotion was announced for Guido ahead of the upcoming Super Bowl. On Monday morning, the team revealed that Guido was set to become their new chief executive officer. While this move will shake up the front office, he will continue reporting to team owner Jed York alongside head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch.

“San Francisco 49ers team president Al Guido is being promoted to chief executive officer of the franchise,” NFL.com reported. “Team owner Jed York had also previously served as the team’s CEO before Guido took over. York will still remain heavily involved as owner of the team with Guido, general manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan all reporting directly to York.”

This is obviously big news for Guido, but given his familiarity with the team, this shouldn’t drastically alter how the front office operates moving forward. Guido will be more involved in this new role, but as noted above, he isn’t going to have free rein to do whatever he wants, as York remains atop the food chain.

What the 49ers do this offseason could end up determining how successful they are in 2026. If they could simply stay healthy, that would certainly help, but you can’t control injuries, unfortunately. San Francisco will have to keep on trucking along, but the overarching belief is that it will be among the top Super Bowl contenders when it returns to action next year.
