The Seattle Seahawks suffered a 19-16 loss to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday night in their second preseason contest, but perhaps the most concerning result of this game was the injuries the team suffered. Seattle watched safety Bud Clark and offensive lineman Mason Richman get forced off the field with serious injuries that are going to cause them to miss a significant amount of time.
The safety position, in particular, is becoming a real area of concern for the Seahawks, as versatile defensive back Nick Emmanwori is still on the Physically Unable to Perform list after undergoing offseason ankle surgery. In the wake of this loss, a new report has emerged indicating that another one of the team’s safeties, Rodney Thomas II, is also dealing with his own injury woes.
Rodney Thomas II Dealing With Hand Injury
In the wake of winning Super Bowl LX, the Seahawks lost starting safety Coby Bryant to the Chicago Bears in free agency. The team felt good about replacing him internally with Ty Okada, though, so it didn’t truly bring in an external option to make up for his loss. If there was a guy who fit that bill, though, it probably would have been Thomas.
A seventh-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Thomas spent the first four years of his career with the Indianapolis Colts. After starting in each of his first two seasons in the pros, Thomas was used primarily as a depth option in 2024 and 2025. Still, he’s a reliable option who can make plays at the back end of the defense, as he has yet to miss a single game during his time in the league.
Even with Bryant’s departure, Thomas had found himself competing for a backup job on the Seahawks’ roster throughout training camp. Clark’s aforementioned injury seemingly opened the door for Thomas to make a late push, but as it turns out, he has his own health issues, as he reportedly underwent surgery to repair a hand injury last week that caused him to miss Seattle’s preseason loss to Tennessee.
“A source told ESPN that another safety, Rodney Thomas II, had surgery this week to repair a fracture in his right hand,” Brady Henderson reported. “Thomas, who’s fighting for a roster spot, did not play Sunday but has a chance to play in Seattle’s preseason finale against the Kansas City Chiefs.”
Seahawks Need Rodney Thomas II to Get Healthy After Losing Bud Clark

The good news for Thomas is that this doesn’t seem like a long-term injury, as he could conceivably take the field for the team’s preseason finale against the Kansas City Chiefs. And with Clark out for the foreseeable future, the Seahawks are going to need a veteran depth option to help replace him for the time being.
If Thomas can’t get healthy before the start of the regular season, that will leave D’Anthony Bell, AJ Finley, and Maxen Hook competing for depth options at the back of Seattle’s roster. Losing Clark hurts, but if Thomas can return to the field at some point this week, he could prove to be a proper replacement for him to begin the year, at the very least.
