Joseph Woll breaks silence on return to Maple Leafs

While Brandon Bussi has been nothing short of a revelation for the Carolina Hurricanes this season, his youth and inexperience in the playoffs against tougher competition might be a slight bit of concern. With Pyotr Kochetkov down for the remainder of the season, and Freddie Anderson not being as sharp as he once was, one of the main items of need before the NHL trade deadline for Carolina is another goaltender that can provide some depth to the group.

With the Toronto Maple Leafs falling out of contention a bit in the Atlantic division, it makes sense that they could be headed towards selling some of their players before the Friday deadline. For the Hurricanes, Joseph Woll makes a lot of sense as another goaltending option, as rumors have circulated that he might be on the move soon.

Joseph Woll Surfaces As Possible Trade Candidate

The Maple Leafs currently have three goalies, but due to Woll’s injury concern, he might be a movable asset.

A recent rumor named Joseph Woll as the goalie from Toronto that’s most likely to be dealt, and the Maple Leafs just roll with Anthony Stolarz and Dennis Hildeby for the future.

The overall consensus, though, is that the Leafs will be sellers this deadline, and that provides the Hurricanes an opportunity to capitalize on Woll’s services.

Woll is 13-9-4 this season with a 3.05 GAA and .906 save percentage.

Freddie Anderson’s 2025-26 stats: 8-10-5, 3.21 GAA, and .874 save percentage.

Woll is much younger than Freddie at 27-years-old, and could be a backup/featured option for Carolina over the next couple of seasons before he becomes an unrestricted free agent.

What Would Carolina Have to Give Up In a Deal for Joseph Woll?

The Carolina Hurricanes have a fairly complete roster, which means they have assets to potentially give up to make a deal for a depth goalie.

It’s important to note that the Hurricanes are clearly in a “Stanley Cup or bust” mindset, being atop the Metro division.

Jesperi Kotkaniemi is a name that has floated around the Hurricanes team as a trade chip, as it seems there’s been some growing disconnect between Kotkaniemi and the Canes organization. Sean Walker or Mike Reilly are defenseman names that could also be candidates to be shipped off.

Aside from a goalie that can add depth, Carolina is also reportedly looking for another right wing that can help out on the third and fourth lines.

Right now, I’d note that goalie is probably the position of priority for the Canes because if the law of averages starts to catch up to Brandon Bussi, Anderson just hasn’t been a dependable enough option to rely on this season.
