The Edmonton Oilers disappointed in a significant way this season. This is because the Oilers not only struggled with consistency during the regular season, but also lost in the first round to the Anaheim Ducks. When noting that the Oilers entered the season with Stanley Cup expectations, it is clear that this season was a failure for Edmonton.
Due to how this campaign went for the Oilers, it would not be surprising if they switched up their roster during the offseason. One of their top needs is another sniper in their top six. They need more scoring from players besides Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl if they hope to be a more significant threat next season.
Because of this, the Oilers are now being urged to make a trade for a notable forward on the Philadelphia Flyers.
Edmonton Oilers Urged to Trade for Philadelphia Flyers Forward Owen Tippett This Summer
In a recent article for The Athletic, Allan Mitchell took a look at a handful of trade targets who the Oilers should consider pursuing during the summer. Among the players who Mitchell urged the Oilers to target is Flyers forward Owen Tippett.
“If Bowman wants to find a veteran sniper to cash Leon Draisaitl’s passes, Owen Tippett might be the perfect fit. The Flyers forward is 27 and has yet to score 30 goals. With Draisaitl as his centre, he could score many more than 30,” Mitchell wrote.
The idea of the Oilers swinging a trade for Tippett is undoubtedly an intriguing one. If the Oilers landed him, he would slot very nicely in their top six and on their power play. With this, it would be understandable if they had the 2017 first-round pick on their radar during the summer.
With the Flyers having a surplus of wingers, Tippett has been in the rumor mill for quite some time. Due to this, he will be a player to keep an eye on during the offseason as a trade candidate. With the Oilers needing another skilled winger, it would make sense if they looked to land him this offseason.
Tippett also just had an excellent regular season for the Flyers in 2025-26. In 81 games this campaign with the Metropolitan Division club, the 6-foot-1 forward scored 28 goals and recorded 51 points. With numbers like these, he would give Edmonton a nice boost as they look to go on a run next season.
Tippett would also be more than a rental for the Oilers if acquired, which adds to his appeal. This is because he has a $6.2 million cap hit until the end of the 2031-32 season.
Oilers Need to Improve Their Forward Group This Summer
Whether it is Tippett or another player, it is clear that the Oilers need to bring in a proven top-six winger this offseason. Their forward group is simply not strong enough, and McDavid and Draisaitl need more help around them.
With Tippett consistently hitting the 20-goal mark, he would be a good player for the Oilers to add to their roster. It will be interesting to see if they end up striking a deal for him from here.
