The Ottawa Senators lost their on-ice captain and their former legendary on-ice captain in the same offseason, as Brady Tkachuk was traded to the divisional rival Florida Panthers, while Daniel Alfredsson joined the coaching staff of the rival Toronto Maple Leafs.
It was a difficult offseason for Senators fans, who are also dealing with the possibility of the club moving on from Drake Batherson amidst contract negotiation difficulties.
The trade of Tkachuk to the Panthers, where he joins forces with his brother Matthew Tkachuk, was partially fueled by his allegedly being “sick” of being in Ottawa, according to one of the team’s top insiders.
“This was going to happen one way or another, and that’s just the reality of the situation,” wrote Senators Insider Bruce Garrioch of The Ottawa Citizen. “Tkachuk wasn’t going to finish out his contract in Ottawa. The Senators were getting tired of the “Captain America” narrative that followed Tkachuk, and he was sick of being here.”

Tkachuk, who also hosts the “Wingmen” podcast along with brother Matthew, was reportedly causing a distraction in the Senators dressing room.
According to a report from NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman, Tkachuk’s podcast rubbed multiple teammates the wrong way.
“The Tkachuk thing, we talked about this at length, and it was time to end the noise around the whole situation. As we talked about in a previous pod, post-Olympics, it was time. A lot was going on, and the players were tired of it,” Friedman said via The 32 Thoughts podcast.
“One of the players said the only thing he felt that we should have added was the podcast. And he said the podcast caused some problems, and it was just time. It’s better for the Senators just to end the noise,” he said.
Brady Tkachuk Was Traded To The Divisional Rival Panthers
Tkachuk was traded to the Panthers, and in return, the Senators received the No. 9 and 25 selections in the 2026 NHL draft, a top-10-protected first-round pick in 2029 and a 2027 second-round pick.
Meanwhile, Alfredsson, who had been serving as an assistant coach behind Ottawa’s bench, stunned Senators fans everywhere by accepting a job with the Maple Leafs under new head coach Jim Hiller.
Alfredsson remained one of the most bitter rivals of Maple Leafs fans throughout his career, routinely being booed heavily whenever he had the puck on his stick in Toronto, along with the throngs of Leafs fans who invaded Ottawa during Senators home games.
