Uncertainty surrounds the latest on the Sidney Crosby injury update ahead of Team Canada’s semi-final matchup against Finland on Friday.

The Team Canada captain left last Wednesday’s quarterfinal game against Czechia after taking a nasty hit in the second period. That situation prompted speculation about whether Crosby would be out for the remainder of the 2026 Winter Olympics.

The consensus has been that Crosby’s injury could be significant enough to keep him out of the lineup. But the latest Crosby injury update has only fueled the uncertainty. During Thursday’s practice, Canadian coach Jon Cooper stayed mum on the situation.

“We’ve got the best of the best looking at him,” he said. “We’re taking this day by day … we’re not going to put anyone in harm’s way. But if he can play, he’s definitely going to.

TSN reported Cooper’s non-committal comments. Perhaps Cooper is merely looking to top his hand to the Finns ahead of Canada’s most important game in the tourney. But Cooper did provide this interesting tidbit.

“We’ll know more in 24 hours.”

In short, it seems that Crosby will be a game-time decision. Getting a day off in between games could have helped the injury heal sufficiently to where Crosby could hit the ice. There will likely be a Crosby injury update in the hours leading up to the game in Milano-Cortina on Friday.

Good Crosby Injury Update Depends on Severity

Team Canada fans will be hoping to get good news ahead of the semi-final game against Finland. Good news, however, will depend on the severity of the injury afflicting the Canadian captain.

The worst fear could be significant damage to a knee ligament. But judging from the way Crosby walked to the dressing room following the injury, there’s a good chance there was no structural damage. Of course, that’s not a medical assessment. But based on typical hockey injuries, it could be that the issue wasn’t as serious.

That’s why a positive Crosby injury update could be the case on Friday.

Canada Won’t Risk Crosby Playing While Injured

The other side of the coin is that Team Canada won’t risk sending Crosby out on the ice if he’s truly hurt. That situation could mean that Crosby might sit out the semi-final game on Friday.

But it’s worth pointing out that Cooper did not rule out Crosby for the remainder of the tournament. Again, that might be Cooper trying to keep a Crosby injury update under wraps for now.

Nevertheless, one has to think that Canada won’t reveal anything more than absolutely necessary. That could mean that Crosby’s inclusion in the lineup on Friday could come down to a last-minute decision.

There is one way, notwithstanding, that Crosby could still be on the ice. Since international rules allow teams to carry 13 forwards, Crosby could suit up as the 13th forward even if his ice time is drastically lower than usual.

Canada would still roll with four full lines and seven defensemen. Pulling off such a move might be more of a symbolic leadership move. But it could be the sort of approach that lights a fire under the team for such a crucial game.
