Gearbox Software knows a thing or two about 1st-person shooters brimming with personality. Their series of Borderlands games have treated players to plenty of looting, shooting and hilarious interactions with standout characters.
Now they’re ready to bring us even more of that winning formula with an entirely new IP – Battleborn. For fans of shooters and the intense gameplay MOBA’s are regarded highly for, you’ll find a lot to love here. There’s a wide variety of characters to master and match up with your playstyle, huge battlegrounds that contain all of the planetary war’s mayhem and wonderfully stylized graphics. Gamers have already hopped into the game’s open beta to get a taste of its chaotic single/multiplayer skirmishes.
Before we all head out into the galaxy on May 3, let’s all get a primer on Gearbox Software’s planetary shooter Battleborn.
1. The Plot Revolves Around Several Factions Fighting to Protect the Very Last Star in the Universe
Battleborn places players far out into a space fantasy setting. An evil entity known as the Varelsi are responsible for the destruction of several planets and stars in the game’s universe. Because of this catastrophic event, several species are forced to flee to the last remaining star in the galaxy – Solus. However, the Varelsi threat looms over this newly discovered star.
Each species is now forced to divide themselves into factions upon arriving on Solus and now have to fend off the Varelsi. The best warriors from these factions (the Last Light Consortium, the Eldrid, the Rogues, the United Peacekeeping Republics and the Jennerit Imperium) are known as the Battleborn, fight to save Solus from certain doom. You’ll be able to participate in the game’s story mode campaign by yourself or play alongside a co-op partner.
2. You’ll Be Able to Take Control of Any of the Game’s 25 Characters During Battles
At launch, Battleborn will offer players the chance to utilize 25 different heroes. These heroes come with different playstyles and the type of wild character designs you’d come to expect from the developers at Gearbox Software. Some of the game’s heroes are tanks who run around the battlefield with huge firearms, some of them do damage from a safe distance and assist their team with stat boost abilities and there are even heavy hitters who mostly focus on melee attacking.

– El Dragón
– Oscar Mike
– Shayne & Aurox
– Whiskey Foxtrot
3. The Gameplay Features Elements of 1st-Person Shooters and MOBA’s
Battleborn relies on the tried and true playstyle of 1st-person shooters, while also adapting the mechanics of MOBA’s. During any match, you’ll be able to experience the full array of a hero’s skill set through the use of the game’s “Helix System.” This system lets you level up your chosen character, starting from level one right on up to the max level of 10.
Outside of these single/multiplayer matches, you can rank up your own player profile and permanently do the same for any hero. As you increase in rank, you’ll unlock powerful loot, new titles and badges. As for the heroes, they can unlock new augments that alter their skill tree and also acquire new character skins.
4. The Competitive Multiplayer is Spread Out Over Three Modes
The multiplayer portion of Battleborn throws players online into 5v5 matches. You can hop into these intense matches through three different modes – Incursion, Capture and Meltdown. Incursion acts more like a MOBA since it commands two teams of heroes to defend their base from AI enemies and human players. At the same time, one team has to run into battle with their own computer controlled minions in order to take down their opponent’s base and win.
Capture combines deathmatch and capture-the-flag; two teams of heroes face off and must capture and hold objectives on the map for the final victory. And Meltdown is a mode where two teams must push their AI soldiers into the middle of the map. The team who ends up with the most minions throwing themselves into the deadly incinerator wins.
5. The Season Pass Will Gift Players With Plenty of Bonus Content for Battleborn’s Single/Multiplayer Modes
Battleborn is prepared not only to offer a wealth of content at launch, but even more bonuses in the months to come. The games’s Season Pass will provide its recipients with full access to five DLC packs as they release. These packs will come with all new story missions, character skins and taunts plus immediate access to five new heroes as soon as they release.
On the pre-order front, Battleborn will gift early adopters with something called the Firstborn Pack.” This special costume DLC pack lets you don your chosen heroes in golden renditions of their regular outfits. You’ll receive these regal character skins for the following heroes – Thorn, Reyna, Montana, Marquis and Rath.
