The Souls franchise has been going strong ever since it’s unexpected arrival as a bonafide hit. We’ve gone through Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls and Bloodborne and enjoyed its spirit crushing difficulty.
Now that the current-gen consoles have arrived, another dosage of numerous deaths, massive bosses and hard-fought boss battles are coming. Dark Souls 3 will up the ante even more with new battle mechanics and the familiar elements fans have come to adore (or abhor) for so long. The world of Dark Souls 3 is rife with fallen royalty, gigantic fiends and plenty of helpful loot that will keep you alive for as long as possible. This entry looks to be even tougher than everything that came before it.
Before you create a new warrior (or victim) for your latest dungeon crawl, here’s every important bit of info you need to know about Dark Souls 3.
1. This is the Final Entry in the “Souls” Series
Hidetaka Miyazaki has been enjoying his role as the series director/supervisor/producer for the Souls series since it’s inception. He’s made it pretty clear that Dark Souls 3 will go out with a bang since it’s the last official entry in the Souls franchise. While speaking with GameSpot, Hidetaka noted that the development team he works for (From Software) needs to move on to something new and that this entry will count as the finale within the Souls series:
It’d be a lie if I said I have no concerns about that. I don’t think it’d be the right choice to continue indefinitely creating Souls and Bloodborne games. I’m considering Dark Souls 3 to be the big closure on the series. That’s not just limited to me, but From Software and myself together want to aggressively make new things in the future. Dark Souls 3 will mark the last game where the development project began before I became president. The next title will be a game that was conceived while I was president. I believe that From Software has to create new things. There will be new types of games coming from us, and Dark Souls 3 is an important marker in the evolution of From Software.
2. New Combat Features are Being Added
On the combat front, Dark Souls 3 adapts the faster and more fluid motions introduced in Bloodborne. Swinging your bladed weaponry and back stepping during close encounters will feel much differently from how they operated in Dark Souls 2. When it comes to one of the new mechanics being implemented for the game’s battle system, players will have to get acclimated with something known as “Weapon Arts.” At the cost of using your Magic Points, you’ll be able to pull off special attacks and other abilities depending on the type of weapon you have equipped. Everything from dual swords to greatswords will have some special attack tied to it that you can pull off against your enemies.
3. Several Elements From the Series Will Make Their Return
Dark Souls is popular within gaming circles due to its demanding difficulty, dark atmosphere and epic boss fights. All of those elements will make a return with this 3rd official entry, plus several more familiar components of the series will return. The use of magic and the magic meter from Demon’s Souls will make a comeback. Your character can refill their health through the use of an Estus Flask, while their magic meter can be refilled with an Ash Estus Flask.
You can once again save your game by resting at bonfires set around the game’s varied environments. You’ll once again have to defend yourself against invading players thanks to the game’s online multiplayer features. But don’t worry – you can also be the one invading a player’s world or assisting them with a particularly tough boss encounter.
4. Three Special Versions of the Game Can be Obtained
While the Standard Edition of Dark Souls 3 is the main option towards obtaining it, there are three special versions of the game that offers extra content. Pre-ordering the Day One Edition will gift you with a physical Prima Starter Strategy Guide, the game’s soundtrack and an exclusive piece of physical sleeve packaging. 5. Two Different Strategy Guides are up for Grabs
For 1st-time or returning players navigating the world of Dark Souls 3, their adventure may be too much of a daunting task. Prima Games, one of the premier producers of official video game strategy guides, have created two helpful books for the game’s player base. The Collector’s Edition guide is a huge hardcover book that comes in at 192-pages. As for the Estus Flask edition, that hardcover strategy guide comes with the following items:
– a physical Emerald Estus Flask
– a physical sculpted version of The Wolf Knight’s Greatsword, which is designed to be a bookmark
