Which Pokemon should be your first Buddy? (Niantic)

Which Pokemon is going to be your first Buddy? Now that Niantic is rolling out the new Pokemon Go Buddy feature for players, players are trying to determine which Pokemon they should select first to use as their Buddy. Here are the best theories and ideas on how to make this decision.

Here’s what you need to know.

Pick a Pokemon That Is Rare in Your Region

One of the reasons that people are so excited about the new update is because they can finally evolve Pokemon that they couldn’t evolve before because they simply didn’t have enough candy. If a Pokemon is rare in your region, you can’t evolve it because you can’t find enough to transfer for candy. So if there’s one Pokemon in particular that you’ve been wanting to evolve, go ahead and choose to walk that Pokemon first.

Pick Your Favorite Pokemon

Another option is to just pick your favorite Pokemon. Many players will likely pick Pikachu as the first Pokemon that they walk as a Buddy, since he’s so popular. If you have a favorite Pokemon and want to screenshot photos of the Pokemon on walks with your avatar, then you might want to choose him first.

Choose a Pokemon That Requires the Least Distance to Get Candy

If you want to be among the first people to get candy from walking your Pokemon, then pick a Pokemon that will give you candy the fastest. Niantic hasn’t released official numbers on how far you’ll need to walk a Pokemon in order to get candy, but according to people who have read the Game Master File, you’ll get candy the fastest from Beedrill, Butterfree, Caterpie, Clefable, Clefairy, Fearow, Geodude, Golbat, Golem, Graveler, Gyarados, Jigglypuff, Kakuna, Magikarp, Metapod, Pidgeot, Pidgeotto, Pidgey, Pikachu, Raichu, Raticate, Rattata, Spearow, Weedle, Wigglytuff, and Zubat.

Choose a Pokemon That Will Evolve Most Efficiently from Walking

If you want to get a little more scientific, then pick a Pokemon that will evolve most easily based on its spawn rate, the candy needed to evolve them, and the candy you gain per km traveled. So far, the Pokemon that appear to be the most efficient for evolving are Charmeleon, Grimer, Dragonair, Kadabra, and Wartortle. You can learn more about how this was determined in our story here.
