The Mets signed Marte to a minor-league contract Wednesday, Michael Mayer of MetsmerizedOnline.com reports. Marte made 14 appearances for the Angels last season, holding a 2.33 ERA and 14:10 K:BB over 19.1 frames. The 28-year-old will give the Mets some experienced relief depth at Triple-A Syracuse.
Marte (shoulder) was activated from the injured list and outrighted to Triple-A Salt Lake on Thursday. Marte underwent surgery on his right shoulder in mid-September and is presumably still recovering. He could be ready to throw by spring training, though no official timeline has been announced by the team.
Marte had successful right shoulder surgery in mid-September, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. Marte's placement on the injured list Aug. 10 was due to a viral infection, and he was transferred to the 60-day IL on Aug. 30. The righty reliever reportedly "felt something in his shoulder" while trying to build up his arm strength, which resulted in a decision to shut down his throwing for the season and undergo shoulder surgery, per MLB.com. It's unclear whether Marte will be ready to pitch when spring training comes around next year.
