The Nationals released Lao on Friday. Lao asked for and was granted his release in order to pursue a playing opportunity in Japan. The 26-year-old collected a 4.91 ERA and 9:2 K:BB over 11 innings between the Mariners and Nationals in 2025.
The Nationals recalled Lao from Triple-A Rochester on Wednesday. Lao was claimed off waivers by the Nationals earlier this month and is now poised to make his team debut. The right-handed reliever has permitted four runs (three earned) over 3.1 frames covering two appearances at the big-league level.
The Nationals claimed Lao off waivers from the Mariners on Wednesday and optioned him to Triple-A Rochester. Lao has been knocked around during his brief time in the majors, but he's collected a 3.13 ERA and 73:19 K:BB over 69 innings this season at Triple-A Tacoma. He'll report to Rochester for now but could get a look with the major-league club before the end of the season.
