Following UFC 125 Loss, Brandon Vera Released From UFC Contract

Former top prospect gets his walking papers

File this one under “not surprising at all:” UFC light heavyweight (and former bright prospect) Brandon Vera has been released by the UFC following his one-sided loss to Thiago Silva at UFC 125 last week.

Sources close to the promotion confirmed the news with Heavy.com on Thursday morning. FiveOuncesofPain.com was the first to report the news.

Vera was once considered a can’t-miss prospect at heavyweight, and even claimed he’d be the first man to hold the heavyweight and light heavyweight titles at the same time. But since an 11-month absence from the cage due to a contract dispute, Vera has never been the same, running up a 3-6 record. He’d lost his last three bouts in a row and has never lived up to the potential he once displayed in a stunning blowout win over Frank Mir.
