UFC vs. Strikeforce superfight booked for October
The fans are getting their wish: UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre will face Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz in the headlining bout of UFC 137. The event will take place October 29.
The bout will be for St. Pierre’s UFC welterweight title.
UFC President Dana White made the announcement via Twitter on Wednesday afternoon. On Tuesday, Diaz signed a new multi-fight contract that allows him to compete in either UFC or Strikeforce. Sources tell HeavyMMA that this new contract is expected to be a normal occurrence among new Zuffa signees, and Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez is expected to be offered the same stipulations in a new Zuffa contract.
White told HeavyMMA.com last week prior to UFC 130 that the fight wasn’t close to being a done deal, but the hurdles have been cleared.
The event will be held at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.
