For the eighth Pan American Games tournament in a row, there will be no gold for the United States men’s basketball team.
The Americans fell to hosts Canada in a thrilling 111-108 overtime contest in Friday’s semifinal. Undoubtedly disappointed with the result, Mark Few’s team will have to quickly shake off the loss if it wants to salvage a bronze medal like it did in 2011. And just like that year, the Dominican Republic, which lost to Brazil in the semis, will be waiting in the consolation game.
If there’s a silver lining for the Americans, it’s the play of the collegiate players. Early in the tournament, the team was being carried by veterans like Damien Wilkins and Bobby Brown, but against Canada, Ron Baker, Denzel Valentine, Taurean Prince and Kaleb Tarczewski all made important contributions. It will be interesting to see if their roles continue to grow in the tournament finale.
