The end of the bout came abruptly in the second frame of the scheduled six-rounder, courtesy of a Hollywood-style hook from Gonzalez that left Lizarraga dazed and limp on the mat. The game Mexican was able to make it to his feet during the last moments of the count, but by then his father/trainer had jumped into the ring and had stopped the fight.
“That left hook is something we have been working on,” said Gonzalez said after the scrap. “I felt calm and relaxed throughout the fight, which helped me to land that shot perfectly.”
Here’s another angle of the knockout:
With the win, 19-year-old up-and-comer Christian Gonzalez improves his perfect record to 11-0 with 10 KOs. The Buena Park native had last been in action outpointing Darryl Hayes, after having kayo’d his first nine professional opponents.
Following four losses in a row, Lizarraga, 22 years old, came into Friday’s encounter looking to redeem himself with an upset over the California prospect, but will instead take back home to Merida, Mexico a 5-6-1, 2 KOs record.
