Liverpool may have lost out on the League Cup to Manchester City via penalties, but at least they won’t have to wait long for revenge. A win over City today at Anfield would put the Blues ten points behind Leicester with 10 matches to play, all but eliminating them from title contention.
Liverpool played will enough to win their first Cup under Jurgen Klopp on Sunday, but three penalty saves from City backup keeper Willy Caballero made all the difference. Liverpool controlled possession against City for most of the action at Wembley Stadium, but the side were caught several times on the counter, one resulting in City’s only goal.
City may have slipped to fourth in the standings, but Pellegrini’s men may be coming around at the perfect time. The team has lost consecutive home fixtures to Spurs and Leicester, but Vincent Kompany is only beginning to integrate himself into the lineup. With Kompany back in form and Kevin De Bruyne set to return this month, City have only the title and Champions League to focus on for the remainder of the season.
