2017 Preview

An Ethiopian man will look to win the Boston Marathon for the third straight time on Monday, as the 121st Boston Marathon gets underway.

After winning the race in 2015, Lelisa Desisa finished seccond last year to compatriot Lemi Berhanu Hayle. Four Ethiopians finished in the top ten of the Men’s Elite Division last year, taking in a combined prize money of over $270,000.

Over 30,000 people run the Boston Marathon, but only a select few will take home prize money. Over 800,000 will be distributed to winners on Monday, and there’s an extra $220,000 set aside if any records are broken. Over the past 30 years, over $18 million has been awarded to the world’s best competing runners.
