Earlier this month, the Yankees released Rafael Montero from their organization.

The SWB RailRiders wrote (on August 10): “The Yankees have made the following roster move affecting SWB: • RHP Rafael Montero released from Minor League contract by NY”

Montero still remains a free agent two weeks later (on August 24).

He did not appear in a game for the Yankees (at the MLB level).

The 35-year-old went 1-4 with a 5.67 ERA in 28 games at the Triple-A level (for SWB).

It will be interesting to see if Montero gets picked up by another team with one month left in the MLB season.

Montero is coming off an MLB season where he spent time with the Houston Astros, Atlanta Braves and Detroit Tigers.

He went 1-2 with a 4.48 ERA in 59 games.

While Montero is far from his prime, he is still a solid arm that has a lot of experience.

In 2022, Montero helped the Astros win the World Series over the Philadelphia Phillies.

He had a 1.93 ERA in 10 MLB playoff games that season.

He has gone 23-30 with a 4.68 ERA in 380 career games.

@NYY_Prospects wrote (on August 10): “RailRiders released RHP Rafael Montero. He made headlines in spring training with a visa issue preventing him from pushing for a roster spot, but the veteran has struggled to a 5.68 ERA in 27 innings with 33 strikeouts with SWB this season.”
