The New York Yankees continue to be talked about as a team who might not be done this offseason.
Brian Cashman accomplished his biggest priority entering the MLB offseason. That priority was to re-sign star outfielder Cody Bellinger. He was able to get that done with a lucrative five-year, $162.5 million contract.
While the Bellinger move was great, the Yankees could still use some help if they want to keep up with teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets who have been extremely aggressive this offseason.
There are a few areas New York could choose to upgrade. One of them would be starting pitching, another would be the bullpen, and a third would be first base.
Paul Goldschmidt remains a potential candidate to be re-signed. Or, the Yankees could look elsewhere. A shocking trade scenario has been suggested for New York.
Could the New York Yankees & Baltimore Orioles Team Up for a Trade?
Jackson Roberts of On SI has suggested a potential trade with the Baltimore Orioles for first baseman Ryan Mountcastle.
“Meanwhile, the Orioles have righty-hitting Ryan Mountcastle in no-man’s land after signing Pete Alonso, making $6.8 million in his last year of arbitration eligibility,” Roberts wrote.
“If the Yankees were to offer Baltimore any pitcher who could conceivably help in the majors this year, wouldn’t the Orioles jump at that chance?”
Mountcastle would be a very intriguing target for the Yankees. Seeing the two AL East rivals come together on a trade would be surprising, but it could make some level of sense.
Last season, the 28-year-old first baseman played in just 89 games. He hit seven home runs to go along with 35 RBI. Back in 2024, he played in 124 games and hit 13 home runs, drove in 63 RBI, and slashed .271/.308/.425.
New York could do much worse than Mountcastle at first base. A trade with Baltimore might be a bit of a surprise, but it can’t be totally written off.
Yankees Have Been Connected to Other Moves as Well
Even though the Yankees have not made a lot of moves this offseason, they were involved in multiple high-profile moves. New York was rumored to have interest in players like Kyle Tucker, Freddy Peralta, and Bo Bichette, but didn’t sign any of them.
Another current rumor floating around would see the Yankees make a trade with the Washington Nationals for shortstop CJ Abrams. That would be a move to potentially replace Anthony Volpe.
New York has also been urged to consider adding more pitching help.
Cashman has his work cut out for him to lead the Yankees back to the World Series. Every team in baseball will start off the season chasing the back-to-back champion Dodgers, but New York has the talent to have a shot.
Adding a piece like Mountcastle and another pitcher could be what’s needed for the Yankees to take over the American League.
