On Friday evening, the New York Yankees played the Tampa Bay Rays in Florida.
They lost by a score of 5-3.
Despite the loss, the Yankees are still at the top of the American League East with an 8-5 record in 13 games.
Former Yankees Player Is Still An MLB Free Agent
With the season well under way, it’s worth noting that a former popular Yankees player is still a free agent.
Gio Urshela is available to sign with any team in the league.
He was released by the Minnesota Twins (on March 20).
Urshela’s MLB Career
Urshela spent the first three seasons of his MLB career playing for the Cleveland Guardians and Toronto Blue Jays.
He then joined the Yankees (in 2019).
That season, the 34-year-old batted .314 with 21 home runs, 74 RBI’s and 73 runs in 132 games.
The Yankees wrote (via X) on August 9, 2019: “Gio is 6-for-10 with 4 homers, a double, and 8 RBIs in his last two games. He’s also currently on a three-game home run streak 🔥”
After his standout season, Urshela played two more seasons for the Yankees before getting traded to the Twins.

Last season (for the Athletics), Urshela batted .238 with 20 RBI’s and ten runs in 59 games.
While he is no longer in his prime, it will be interesting to see if another team takes a chance on him before the end of the 2026 season.
Looking Ahead For The Yankees
The Yankees have two more games in Tampa Bay.
They will then head back to the Bronx to host Mike Trout and the Angels on April 13.
Last season, the Yankees lost in the ALDS.
