The San Francisco Giants have been relatively quiet so far during the MLB offseason, but there is still time for the team to dip into the free agency market for a splash type of move.
Looking at the current roster, there is one clear need that the Giants should try to address. Of course, that need comes in the starting rotation.
Over the last few years, San Francisco has come up short of its desired destination. Buster Posey and the Giants badly want to get back to being a contender in the National League. In order to make that happen, they’ll need to make some aggressive moves.
With that being said, a new prediction has been made for San Francisco. The prediction would entail the Giants adding a star pitcher off of the MLB free agency market.
San Francisco Giants Get Prediction to Land $33 Million Star Pitcher
Framber Valdez remains a free agent and is one of the top players available on the market. San Francisco badly needs pitching and Valdez is a perfect match for the team.
Keeping that in mind, FanSided’s Christopher Kline has predicted that Valdez will end up signing with the Giants when everything is said and done.
“Framber Valdez is 32 and he made a fool of himself when he intentionally crossed up his own catcher late last season. A combination of negative factors has led his market to stagnate a bit — at least it appears that way from the outside,” Kline wrote.
“But the San Francisco Giants have let most of this winter’s opportunities pass them by. Valdez makes for an excellent No. 3 starter behind Logan Webb and Robbie Ray, and he’d also benefit immensely from San Francisco’s collection of high-level infield gloves.”
Making a move for Valdez would be exactly what San Francisco needs in order to salvage the offseason. If the Giants can’t make an impact move, there would be concern about another wasted season coming in 2026.
What Would It Take for the Giants to Sign Framber Valdez?
There is no question that Valdez is going to require a hefty salary. However, San Francisco cannot allow that to scare them away.
Spotrac’s market value projection for Valdez currently sits at around $33 million per season. They have suggested that a potential contract for him could land in the six-year, $199.9 million range.
That’s an expensive deal, to say the least. Despite that fact, Valdez has a long track record of being a highly productive starting pitcher.
Last season with the Houston Astros, Valdez made 31 starts. He compiled a 13-11 record to go along with a 3.66 ERA, a 1.24 WHIP, a 2.8 K/BB ratio, and 192 innings pitched. Back in 2024, he ended up with a 15-7 record in 28 starts, a 2.91 ERA, a 1.11 WHIP, a 3.1 K/BB ratio, and 176.1 innings completed.
Signing Valdez, even though it will be pricey, is well worth it for the Giants. They need starting pitching and Valdez was always one of the best available this offseason.
Expect to see Valdez’s market start heating up in the near future. It would not be surprising to see San Francisco jump into that market.
