The St. Louis Cardinals are promoting stud-prospect Raniel Rodriguez to Double-A Springfield.
Rodriguez, 19, is the Cardinals’ number two prospect since former headliner JJ Wetherholt moved on from prospect status.
This season, Rodriguez is hitting .311 with a .949 OPS in his first 128 plate appearances. As a backstop, the offensive production he’s mustered is elite.
Rodriguez has a rare combination of slug, hit tool, and age while playing a prominent position in the field. Scouts have said Rodriguez relies on his elite bat speed to generate high exit velocities and immense power for a teenage prospect. He pairs his raw power with a disciplined approach. Through Rodriguez’s first 28 games, he’s struck out 24 times and walked 19 times.
The defensive skill set is still developing, but he’s had success throwing out runners, and his build screams catcher. Rodriguez might be the most exciting prospect in the Cardinals’ system.
MLB World Reacts to Raniel Rodriguez’s Promotion
Here’s what baseball is saying about Rodriguez’s promotion:
Kareem Haq: “Rainiel Rodriguez’s 2026 stats (A+): 128 PA, .311/.430/.519, 148 wRC+, 14.8% BB%, 18.8% K%. Rodriguez has been promoted to Double-A Springfield after a dominant start to the season. He will now be the second-youngest hitter at the level, behind only Jesus Made.”
Eric Cross: “Rainiel Rodriguez has been promoted to Double-A. Season (128 PA), .311/.430/.519, 13 XBH, 4 HR, 4 SB, 14.8% BB, 18.8% K. With recent promotions, Rodriguez is now inside my Top-10 overall. #STLCards.”
Cardinals Player Development: “At 19.2 years old, Rodriguez was the youngest player to open the season at High-A. With his promotion to Springfield, he will be the second-youngest player at the Double-A level behind Jesús Made.”
Lyndal Scranton: “19-year-old catching prospect Rainiel Rodriguez has been promoted to Double-A @Sgf_Cardinals just in time for the team to beat on the road the next 2 weeks. Next home game is May 25th (Memorial Day) vs. Wichita.”
Springfield Cardinals: “The teenage sensation is a Springfield Cardinal. St. Louis has promoted their number 2 prospect, 19-year-old catcher Rainiel Rodriguez to Double-A Springfield.”
John Denton: “Looks like C/1B Rainiel Rodriguez — prospect No. 27 in MLB and No. 2 in the #STLCards system — is headed to Double-A Springfield. In 28 games at High-A Peoria this season, the 19-year-old Rodriguez has a .949 OPS with four homers.”
The Cardinals Have Elite Catching Depth
Outside of Rodriguez, St. Louis has other highly touted catching prospects in Jimmy Crooks and Leo Bernal. All of this length in the minors is behind three backstops on the big club’s roster: Ivan Herrera, Pedro Pages, and Yohel Pozo.
With so many different options, St. Louis must start thumbing through players now. Crooks has a 1.050 OPS in 30 games with Triple-A Memphis, the aforementioned Rodriguez is lighting it up, Bernal is a defense-first catcher who puts up quality at-bats, and the additional catchers on the Cardinal roster are plus backup options.
St. Louis is approaching decision time. President of Baseball Operations Chaim Bloom will have to decide what direction he wants to go behind the dish. If the Cardinal catching cohort continues to blossom, St. Louis’ front office will have plenty of head-scratching decisions to make. A fun problem to have when it involves TOO MUCH talent. Yadier Molina may have retired, but catching prowess remains a tradition in The Lou.
