On Saturday, Feb. 9, the Atlanta Falcons received troubling news regarding rookie edge rusher James Pearce Jr.
According to a Miami-Dade police report, Pearce was arrested on multiple charges, including two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon (domestic), aggravated stalking (domestic), fleeing and eluding police officers, aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer and resisting an officer without violence.
Per Pablo Hernandez of Local 10 News, Pearce allegedly attempted to evade police before crashing his vehicle at Northwest 103rd Avenue and 66th Street. He was then taken into custody and booked into Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center awaiting his bond to be set.
Video footage circulating from the scene appears to show Pearce being detained. In the video, the individual is seen wearing a light blue jacket that matches Pearce’s arrest photo.
Multiple officers were involved in taking him into custody.
Domestic Incident Involved WNBA Player
Hernandez also reported that the domestic incident involved WNBA player Rickea Jackson of the Los Angeles Sparks.
“Lopez confirmed with Local 10 News that the woman in the dispute was WNBA star Rickea Jackson,” Hernandez wrote.
Jackson currently plays for the Sparks after being selected No. 4 overall in the first round of the 2024 WNBA Draft out of Tennessee.
That may be where the two crossed paths, as both competed for the Volunteers from 2022 to 2024.
Pearce was selected No. 26 overall in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. The Falcons traded back into the first round to take him, surrendering their 2026 first-round pick in the process.
Falcons Respond to James Pearce Jr. Incident
It was only a matter of time before the Falcons addressed the situation involving their rookie edge rusher.
“We are aware of an incident involving James Pearce Jr. in Miami. We are in the process of gathering more information and will not have any further comment on an open legal matter at this time,” the team said in a statement shared by The Athletic’s Josh Kendall.
The situation presents an early challenge for a franchise entering a new era under general manager Ian Cunningham, president of football Matt Ryan and head coach Kevin Stefanski.
What this ultimately means for Pearce remains unclear. Any team decision will likely hinge on how the legal process unfolds, which could take time.
On the field, Pearce was coming off an impressive rookie campaign. In 17 games, he recorded 10.5 sacks, 16 quarterback hits, 10 tackles for loss, one forced fumble and five pass deflections. Though he did not win AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors, he was widely viewed as one of the league’s top first-year defenders.
He was expected to be a major piece of a Falcons defense that emerged as one of the NFL’s better units last season.
Now, both his immediate future and long-term outlook are uncertain.
